Job Description
 
Job Title: On-call Pianist Musician/Singer                       Status: Part-time (flexible) 
 
Exemption Status: Non-exempt
 
Department/Location: Our Lady of the Valley Parish, Music Ministry, Green Valley, AZ
 
Primary Function: Under the direction of the Pastor, Liturgy Director, and Music Director, is responsible for working cooperatively in performing during the weekly liturgical music ministry for funerals, weddings, select weekend Masses, and other special liturgical celebrations. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1)
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform as a lay minister in support of the parish’s spiritual and pastoral mission
  • Shall abide by Catholic principles in the musician’s professional and private life and shall govern his/her professional and private life in accordance with Catholic morals and principles to demonstrate adherence to Catholic moral strictures.
  • Accompany congregation at funerals, weddings, select weekend Masses, Christmas, Easter, and other special liturgical celebrations.
  •  Attend rehearsals as scheduled and rehearse as needed on own time in order to be prepared.
  • Be well-versed in the liturgy of the Catholic church and the propriety of the duties including an understanding of the rubrics of the Church.
  • Maintain Church protocol including maintaining an environment of respect and solemnity at all liturgical celebrations (including prior to and after) and at rehearsals.
  • Respond in a timely manner to written correspondence regarding liturgy celebrations, scheduling, or other matters.
  • Attend Music Ministry meetings, music ministry retreats, and other scheduled meetings and events.
  • Maintain open communication with other musicians and volunteer musicians.
  • Maintain space in the Church, including storing equipment and materials appropriately.
  • Be accountable to the Pastor, Liturgy Director and Music Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, normal mental and visual ability, ability to lift as required in a normal musical environment.
 
Required Activities: Walking; sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; handling; hearing; carrying; and keyboarding.
 
Basic Qualifications:
  • A working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church; must also be a practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church.
  • Employ flexibility and follow direction; be a team player and be self-motivated.
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously (singing and playing)
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, volunteers, parishioners, and the general public.
  • Punctuality is a must at all times. Keeping accurate timesheet.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to successfully pass a background and criminal history check.
  • Complete safe training as per requirements, and attend annually environment training of the Church
  • Professionalism; clean and neat appearance
Education and Experience:
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Music
  • Experience and knowledge with Catholic liturgical music
Other/Preferred Skills:
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish/English)
  • Strong sight-reading skills and learning new music
